What is Shattered Enigma?

Shattered Enigma is a fan fiction and fan art website devoted to collecting and preserving the highest quality fan fiction and fan art set in the Blizzard gaming universes (Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft). All stories and artwork found on Shattered Enigma have been screened heavily, allowing only the best to be seen. Anything less is not worth your time.

Shattered Enigma is not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment in any way, and Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft are all their property. All works on this site are property of their owners, and no copyright infringement is intended.

What is the history of Shattered Enigma?

Shattered Enigma was founded by writer and web designer Goddess in late January of 2003 on free webspace. Originally containing only a few stories, Goddess spoke with author Dark-Elk about permission to host one of his stories, Half Machine, All Warrior. Dark-Elk accepted this proposal, but countered with another. Dark-Elk had recently begun working at Allconsoles as a graphics designer, and had webspace free from his staff position. Dark-Elk offered the webspace to Goddess to move Shattered Enigma to. Goddess accepted Dark-Elk's offer, and over a short period of time, Shattered Enigma was moved to http://se.allconsoles.com. Somewhere during that transition period, Dark-Elk became a staff member on Shattered Enigma, and eventually became the primary coder of Shattered Enigma.

Shattered Enigma added new staff members shortly after: Dark was added for his skill in PHP and other advanced coding forms, Sapphire was added to manage the message boards that Shattered Enigma acquired in March, and Jaxom92 was added to assist in the promotion of Shattered Enigma. The core staff finally acquired, Shattered Enigma grew quickly.

During all of these staff and story acquisitions, the layout of Shattered Enigma continued to evolve. From its original form to the one it held before Shattered Enigma moved again, the layout went through 4 disctinct modifications. Late in April, Shattered Enigma also added GrimMoody to our staff.

In late May of 2003, Dark-Elk entered into a webhosting contract with Future Point, Inc. web hosting, and purchased the domain of www.shatteredenigma.com. More heavy work was done to perfect and modify the design of Shattered Enigma, and in mid-June, Shattered Enigma moved from http://se.allconsoles.com to www.shatteredenigma.com.

Since that move, Shattered Enigma has been upgraded slowly but tirelessly. A review system was added, allowing users to give feedback to the remarkable authors Shattered Enigma hosts. New stories were found pretty much daily, allowing Shattered Enigma to continue to boast a very large archive.

In August of 2003, staff member GrimMoody left Shattered Enigma for personal matters and a conflict of interest. Later in the month, systems were again upgraded as Shattered Enigma added a mailing list to our services, allowing members and viewers to find out about updates in advance.

How do I apply to become a staff member?

Staff members on Shattered Enigma are expected to demonstrate skill in one or more of the following areas:

Web Design (HTML knowledge necessary, PHP/CGI/SSI helpful.)

Graphics Design (Able to create new images from existing images, or create entirely new images)

Reading (Must demonstrate excellent judgement in reading stories to determine quality, good spelling ability)

Regardless of which section you are skilled in, Shattered Enigma requires a sample of your work. If it is web design, please send us a sample webpage you have designed. If graphics design, please send us an image you have created. If reading, please send a sample story with your review (Get permission from the author before you do!). All applications should be sent to
dark-elk@shatteredenigma.com, and have "Job Application" as the subject line.

What are "Featured Stories"?

Featured Stories are stories that are exceptionally high-quality. Only the best stories found on Shattered Enigma have a chance to become Featured Stories. Featured Stories are stories that the staff of Shattered Enigma believe that should be read by everyone. There are a number of Featured Stories for each universe, a number determined by a simple system.

Each universe starts with 2 Featured Stories. Once a universe has 20 stories, another is added. Stories are also added after the universe has 40,60, and 80 stories.

Featured Stories recieve a custom banner image, and the authors are interviewed by staff member Jaxom92 about their story and their writing. Other benefits of Featured Stories are coming soon!

How do I let members know what I think about their stories or artwork?

Shattered Enigma allows all users the ability to leave comments on all artwork, wallpaper, stories, and articles found on Shattered Enigma. On all of these content types, simple forms can be found that require a name and your comment. Be sure to do this as often as you can! All our artists and authors are top notch here, and deserve to be told so!

What does the future hold for Shattered Enigma?

Shattered Enigma has many projects right now, some of them short-term, others long-term. Currently we are working on a system to allow authors to edit their own information, post biographies about themselves, and leave signed reviews on stories. Other projects include new ways to sort stories on the main universe pages, monthly columns, and many other various improvements. Also, Shattered Enigma continues to search for new stories to add to our database.

Shattered Enigma isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The staff of Shattered Enigma is both highly-skilled and very committed to Shattered Enigma, and will continue to strive to bring you, the reader, the best Blizzard fanfiction found anywhere on the Internet!

What are the Shattered Enigma submission guidelines?

When submitting stories or artwork to Shattered Enigma, please ensure that your submissions meet the following criteria:

1. All submissions must be based on the StarCraft, WarCraft, or Diablo universes. Currently, Shattered Enigma does not accept fanfiction or artwork based on other computer game genres.

2. Shattered Enigma is a fanfiction/fanart site designed for the enjoyment of people of all ages, and if submissions contain excessive violence, coarse language, or mature themes, this must be indicated to the Fiction or Art Manager. Submissions containing such components may be subject to bearing a discretionary notice if hosted on Shattered Enigma. Racist or pornographic submissions will not be accepted.

3. All submissions sent to Shattered Enigma must be the original work of the author/artist. There is a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism, and offenders will have their submissions removed immediately and may be prohibited from submitting work in the future.

4. Stories must be proofread and spell checked before submission to Shattered Enigma. Remember, only the best submissions are accepted for posting. Artwork must be submitted in its final form, as it will not be subject to any graphical revisions or editing.

5. Fanfiction submissions must be in the form of short stories or novels. At the present time, Shattered Enigma does not host Blizzard-based plays, songs, etc. Stories and novels should ideally be submitted in doc. or txt. format.

Artwork can come in the form of pen or pencil sketches, paintings, or other real-world 2d creations; Photoshop-rendered or digitally created images are also accepted. Wallpapers are also welcome for submission in 1024x768 and 800x600 formats, and other resolutions may be sent, though Shattered Enigma reserves the right to not use them. Shattered Enigma accepts 'sampled', widely available Blizzard-produced images as elements in art and wallpaper, but use of images produced by any other source (i.e. other fan artists) is absolutely prohibited and considered as plagiarism without written consent of the image's creator. Artwork should ideally be submitted in jpeg. format.

6. Should an author/artist wish to have an accepted submission taken down from Shattered Enigma, a formal request must be placed to the Fiction or Art Manager. The request must clearly state what works the author/artist would like removed; a valid reason for their removal is also appreciated, though optional. Authors/artists may only request their own work to be removed from the site.

7. Shattered Enigma reserves the right to reject submissions based on grounds of low quality or irresolvable technical difficulties or incompatibilities. Submitters will be informed if their work is not accepted on the basis of technical incompatibilities.

To avoid conflicts of interest or consent, Shattered Enigma will not host stories or artwork without the express written consent of the author or artist. Shattered Enigma keeps documentation of written permission from each author/artist whose work is accepted.

Shattered Enigma is not liable for technical difficulties resulting in temporary or permanent inaccessibility of any submission. Shattered Enigma is also not liable in the event of any illegal or inappropriate actions (such as plagiarism) relating to a submission by members or visitors to Shattered Enigma, although site staff will take action to assist the plagiarized author/artist and reprimand the offender.
