Forums Issues, posted 02-09-2006 by Dark-Elk
I apologize for taking so long to explain to the community the nature of the current errors with the forums.
Our installation of PHP was upgraded this past weekend and is apparently in conflict with our current (and future) versions of PHPBB, which is the forum software we run. It also had some minor conflicts with our site administration panel, but those have been resolved now.
We're currently evaluating the feasibility of trying to recode large segments of our PHPBB install, or trying to migrate to another forum software.
In the meantime, we do ask your patience and understanding as we try and resolve these issues.
Thank you. |

In the eightteen months I have worked at Shattered Enigma, I have had the opportunity to meet, and work alongside, some truly amazing people. Though the time has come for me to depart, I count my time as Art Manager here well spent.
I close this chapter of my life with resentment towards none, and good will to all the people I have had the honor of working with on the SE Staff. Let me say of those who have gone before - Jaxom, Zeji, 3ternity, Clarke, Chrono, Cobra, Matt, Shardz, Gryff and the others - and even moreso of those who remain - Angel and Elk - the vast time and effort you have committed to this site are things to be very proud of, and worthy of the highest respect.
I look forward to seeing you all around the old internet, on the forums or World of WarCraft. You're all crazy, but you're a good group of folks.
To all those who have come here looking for quality stories and breathtaking art, I know you have not and will never be disappointed. One final time, I thank you for making Shattered Enigma the best in WarCraft, StarCraft and Diablo artwork and fiction.

Once believe to be a singularly vile, bloodthirsty and demonic race, the orcish people are actually a noble, spiritual lot. Originating on the planet Draenor, where they held sway over the smaller, weaker races there, they became corrupted and controlled by agents of the demonic Burning Legion, who transformed the orcs into engines of hate and destruction to be used against the races of the world of Azeroth. Now they have - most of them - returned to their shamanistic roots, free of the Legion's bonds.

For many millenia, the reclusive Night Elves of Kalimdor cultivated a quiet, secret civilization within the forests of their homeland. The center of this society was the World Tree, Nordrassil. Unfortunately, Nordrassil - and the Night Elves' immortal power - was necessarily sacrificed in order to defeat the demonic Burning Legion when it attacked Azeroth for the fourth time. Under the new Arch-Druid, Fandral Staghelm, a new world tree called Teldrassil has been planted off the coast of Northwestern Kalimdor. Whether Teldrassil will bestow the same gifts of immortality and peace its predecessor did, however, remains to be seen.

Reclusive and mysterious, the Night Elves of Teldrassil are a new breed. They venture forth now from their Great Trees into a large and unknown world, full of danger and adventure.

A fiction update. It’s been, what, forever times two since we’ve had one of these?

At long last, StormrageJunior, posted 10-18-2005 by Forever Jake
Ladies and Gentlemen, long overdue for attention is our newest artist at Shattered Enigma, one StormrageJunior. His work is, to say the least, rather impressive, and I am sure you will enjoy it as I have.
Rogues and demon hunters of dark, unknown power, the elite Watchers of Kalimdor are charged with the nigh-impossible task of overseeing and controlling the various deadly prisoners captured by the Sentinels in their watch. Traitors, demons, and other dark creatures languish within their prisons, with only the Wardens' hateful visage for companionship.

A proud, ancient race, the Night Elves has recently lost their immortality, forced to fend for themselves in a world of mortals. Yet once, before the coming of the Legion, they were powerful indeed, an enigmatic group known only to younger races as legends and whispered mythos. It was then, in those shadowed ages, that their power truly thrived. It was then, in their unspoiled reign, that their mysteries surrounded them.

New Poll!, posted 10-14-2005 by Dark-Elk
There's a new poll we'd love you all to vote in. Basically, we want to know how you think we're doing. Give us a score from 1 to 5, where 5 is "You guys rock!" and 1 is "You suck!". If you've something more expansive to say to us, please use the comment feature on this post.
As a side note, I would like to register my personal unhappiness that people found it amusing to continue to vote on our last poll, making the results seem other than what they were. Your IP's have been recorded. When Shattered Enigma rolls out our upgrade later this year, you can expect to find yourself banned from a number of functions found on Shattered Enigma, including the poll. I hope that all our members understand the logic behind this; Shattered Enigma takes great pride in our work, the work we host, and the contests we hold. People continuing to vote to obfuscate or alter the results in our contest have goals that run counter to what we hope to achieve.
Fiction updates are scheduled to resume next week, so get ready for the same caliber of amazing, high-quality Blizzard fan fiction you've come to expect from Shattered Enigma: The Best in Blizzard Fiction and Artwork. |
Children's Week, posted 10-11-2005 by Forever Jake
Happy Tuesday, Shattered Enigma! Tonight I have for your viewing pleasure three more exceptional sketches of the World of WarCraft by our newest artist, Carde.
If nothing else, Azeroth and its lands are very conducive to friend-making. Anyone who's rolled a female character knows that at some point before level 10 you will be approached by a male character a level or two higher than you who wants to help you quest for no discernable reason. Maybe it's your outfit, maybe he's just being friendly, right?

Anyone who's spent time near the Auction House in Ironforge has seen the human man who circles the court there, begging citizens and tourists to donate to help the orphans of Stormwind. The poor kids have been through some bad times, but once a year, for one week, the city throws a festival honoring them and drawing attention to their cause. This is called Children's Week.

More visions of WarCraft from Poojipoo, posted 09-29-2005 by Forever Jake
A proud, ancient race, the reclusive Night Elves remained hidden in their shadowy forests for many millenia, preparing themselves for the day when the demonic Burning Legion would return to threaten Azeroth again. Now that the Legion has been beaten, these once-immortal people have ventured out into the world beyond their borders for the first time, exploring its lengths and depths for themselves.

Huge and imposing, the Tauren of Thunder Bluff have come far from the all-too-recent days of aimless wandering across the desolate Barrens, starved and hunted at the mercy of the vicious Centaur bands. Like the Night Elves, the Tauren are deeply spiritual in their newfound search for identity in a larger world than they have known. Foremost in this search are those who have adopted the ways of the Orc Shamans.

Back with a vengeance!, posted 07-19-2005 by Forever Jake
Good afternoon, Shattered Enigma! It is my honor to bring you our first update in weeks - and there is much to report, friends.
First, I am sad to announce the departure of Matt Morwell and 3ternity from our staff. They have both been very helpful and they will be missed. We wish them well.
Second, I am proud to introduce two staff members who are stepping up to the plate to accept the responsibility of filling this void. Chrono Cross Maniac, our former Head Proofreader, will be replacing 3ternity as Fiction Manager. CobraCommander, our former Assistant Proofreader, will be taking over as Head Proofreader. Wish them luck!
Third, I would like to remind all of our writers that the 2005 Summer Short Story Contest closes on July 31st. All entries must be in by then. For more details, check out our contests page.
Fourth, I am here to announce again the opening for Assistant Art Manager. This will probably be the easiest position SE has ever offered. Should you take this job, staff meeting attendance is not required; you will report to me alone, and not the rest of the staff. Your responsiblities would be limited to finding new high-quality Blizzard artwork and referring me the websites you found it on so that I can contact the artists. Though this job will be easy, however, reliability is still a must.
Please email me at forever-jake@shatteredenigma.com if you are interested. I look forward to hearing from you!
Finally, after a month and a half without new art on SE, I am very, very happy to introduce to you artist Scott Hepting, creator of the Goobz webcomic.

Lovely, lovely Friday, posted 06-17-2005 by Dark-Elk
A happy Friday afternoon to all SE visitors! This isn't a content update, if you were hoping for one. Those are scheduled to resume sometime shortly.
However, I wanted to bring up a few announcements and things of that nature.
First, Shattered Enigma is saddened to announce that Staff Manager Shardendra has stepped down from her position and away from Shattered Enigma Management. The staff of Shattered Enigma wish her luck in her future endeavors and academic career, and thank her for everything she did for the site.
Second, it is my pleasure to announce that Shattered Enigma's very own Angelcascade has taken over the position of Staff Manager, in addition to her current position as Community Manager! Send her a PM on the forums or comment here and wish her luck!
Third, I would like to publicly announce open positions Shattered Enigma has on the staff. Here's quick rundown of what we're looking for.
Graphic Designer:
This position maintains the layout and graphics on SE and the forums, along with supplying our contest winners and Featured Stories with custom banner artwork. This position does not have a regular work schedule, as all duties revolve around situational needs. Experience is preferred, but not required. Knowledge of HTML and CSS is also preferred, but not required. This position is not required to attend weekly staff meetings, but MSN Messenger is a requirement. If you think you have potential for this position, or wish for further information, please email Dark-Elk.
Assistant Art Manager:
This position revolves around locating more high quality artwork and wallpaper from the Blizzard community, and inviting the artists onto Shattered Enigma. You need to have a good eye for artwork, and a good grasp of what Shattered Enigma considers to be high quality. Experience not required. The Art department is headed up by Forever Jake, so he would be your supervisor. Fortunately, he's a pretty easy going guy, so don't let that scare you away. This position is not required to attend weekly staff meetings, but MSN Messenger is a requirement. This position is expected to consume approximately two to four hours weekly, depending on level of commitment and availability of content. Good people skills and the ability to send formal emails with proper spelling and punctuation are both required. If you think you have potential for this position, or wish for further information, please email Forever Jake
Non-Fiction Manager:
This position is a managerial role over a department that does not yet exist at Shattered Enigma. Currently SE is primarily a source of fiction and artwork, but we are looking to build up a strong non-fiction library, be it interviews with various members, periodic columns or articles about Blizzard universes or writing, or other categories. This manager would make a periodic front page update like our other content managers on a schedule determined by the entire staff based on content availabilty and time constraints. This position is required to attend weekly staff meetings, and MSN Messenger is a requirement. This position is expected to consume approximately three to six hours weekly, depending on level of commitment and availability of content. Good people skills and the ability to send formal emails with proper spelling and punctuation are both required. If you think you have potential for this position, or wish for further information, please email Dark-Elk
So there you have it! We need your help in continuing our drive to be the biggest and best Blizzard fan fiction, fan art, and fan non-fiction site on the Internet! Send us an email if you think you can help in any other ways that aren't specified above, as well, because we are always open to suggestions.
Finally, the Short Story Contest was launched earlier this week. We hope for a strong turnout!
Have a good weekend! |
Summer 2005 Short Story Contest!, posted 06-15-2005 by Angelcascade
Hello, loyal SE fans! It is my duty and pleasure to announce a very exciting event that is taking place once again here at SE – the short story contest!
This year we are introducing something new - a division system, which will allow all prizes to come your way! There are now two divisions – a staff and an open division. Visit our contest page for all the great details, as well as the guidelines for entering.
Entries close on July 31st at midnight (Central Standard Time). Get cracking, and start writing! |
Forums are up!, posted 06-08-2005 by Dark-Elk
After a long and arduous journey to rebuild the shattered forums (No pun intended), the Shattered Enigma forums are back online and better than ever!
I won't go into all the new things that are there, but the most obvious definitely deserves some major recognition. Staff member and Forum Manager Angelcascade redesigned the look of our forums, giving them a snappy color scheme nearly identical to the one found on Shattered Enigma itself! Register for a forum account and drop her a congratulatory PM, because she definitely deserves it!
Some of you may also notice the forum structure has changed. Most of the descriptions are pretty self-explanatory, but when Angelcascade returns from a well-deserved vacation next week we're going to get into the thick of it! New features, contests, organized forum events, the whole nine yards!
So if you had a forum account before, go register. If you didn't have one, what were you thinking?! Go rectify your error and sign up for one today.
See you on the new forums! This is but the first of many changes coming soon to Shattered Enigma, so don't go anywhere! |
A long time, posted 06-07-2005 by Dark-Elk
Shattered Enigma viewers, it's been a long time but I'm here to bring you a bit of a news update on the happenings here at Shattered Enigma.
First, you may have noticed it's been about a week without updates. This is because our fantastic Fiction and Art departments are taking a bit of a break from updating, and instead are working together with the rest of the staff to undertake...SPRING CLEANING.
Granted, it's not exactly spring anymore as any themometer will show. However, that's not stopping us from sifting through our archive and weeding out things that we don't think meet our standards anymore. Don't worry, we're not removing all that much. Besides, if we don't like it, you probably wouldn't either.
Second, it is my duty to inform you of a forum downtime that is scheduled to happen Tuesday, June 7th at night. Length of downtime is unspecified, but in that timeframe we're planning a complete reinstall of our forum software. If you've thought about signing up for a forum account but haven't because it seems a bit daunting, now is the time. All posts, threads, forums, and users are being deleted as we upgrade. Everyone will have a fresh slate, and we've got some great things planned for the forums in the near future.
Third, if a forum upgrade wasn't enough, we've got some changes to SE itself looming on the horizon. What better time to start rolling out some new features and things that we don't think have ever been done before? Want to know what we're doing? Stay tuned and active, because we'll start leaking some details in a week. Trust us, you're going to love what you hear.
So, in short, Shattered Enigma is in a state of transition on all fronts to better serve your needs as part of the Blizzard fan community. If you've any suggestions, comments, or words of encouragement, they are most welcome either via the forums after the upgrade, as a comment on this news post, or at any of the email addresses on the staff page
Stay tuned! |
New art from a new artist, posted 05-31-2005 by Forever Jake
Hello, Shattered Enigma! This afternoon it is my pleasure to introduce to you Spica2041, our newest Blizzard fanartist.
Scorned by their brethren for their obsession with magic, the maligned Demon Hunters are capable of utilizing demons' own powers against them. Beings of shadow and mystery, few have ever been captured by the wardens that hunt them. Though isolated by their history from rejoining mainstream Night Elf society, these dark warriors are nonetheless a vital part of the silent war against the demonic curruption that is ever threatening the lands of Azeroth.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and what a great evening it is! Tonight, SEgoers, it is my great honor and pleasure as your Art Manager to announce the closing, and the results, of our first ever Featured Artist awards!
First, though, I'm afraid I have a brief announcement to make. Our forums are currently down for necessary maintenence. While we do not have a specific expected time for them to come back up, please rest assured that we are working as quickly as possible and that they will be back up and functioning very soon.
Now that that's taken care of, you can congratulate your fellow artists, J CAE and ZejiHydra - Shattered Enigma's first two Featured Artists! Each are longtime members, and coincidentally, authors as well as artists here on our site. Please give them a hearty Mazel Tov - they are both well worthy of this great new honor.
If you've been living under a rock for the last two weeks or are simply new to our site, our winners were elected by public poll out of a short list of nominees. Each Featured Artist will enjoy added publicity for his or her work here on the main page (on the sidebar and Hotbox to the left and right of this post, respectively), as well as an exclusive interview about his or her work and the opportunity to provide a short bio to appear in his or her profile.
These rewards will begin to be implemented in the near future. In addition, stay tuned for more of the best Blizzard-universe art and fiction the internet has to offer. |

Featured Artist Election, posted 03-09-2005 by Forever Jake
Ladies and Gentlemen of Shattered Enigma, it is my pleasure and honor to announce the commencement of a new competition here at SE, and one that has been a long, long time in coming.
These past months have seen a huge number of new artists join us here at SE, as well as beautiful new creations from some of our oldest members. In less than a year, SE has changed from a fanfiction site with some fanart to a fanfiction and fanart site.
Writers at SE can aspire to have their work elected to Featured Story status, but for far too long our fabulous artists have lacked a similar honor to reach for... until now.
Tonight begins the newest contest here at SE: the Featured Artist contest. Featured Artists will receive a host of rewards here on the site: their work will be linked to from the sidebar at left and from the Hotbox, they will be interviewed by the staff of SE, and they will be given the opportunity to compose a brief biography that will appear at the top of their member profile page.
The following artists have been nominated for this esteemed position:
Forever Jake
J Cae
Gamewiz
Phillip Gonzales
Mayavan Thevendra
ZejiHydra
Killst4r
You, the community, will vote in the poll below to determine who out of the list of nominees above will be awarded this honor. Voting will conclude in two weeks' time - at midnight on March 24th. At that time, the two artists with the most votes out of all the nominees will become SE's first Featured Artists.
It's up to you, SE! Now go vote! |

Back online!, posted 01-15-2005 by Dark-Elk
If you're reading this, it means a few things:
A. You're not blind! This is always a good thing for our members, because we have no way to cater to a blind audience.
B. Shattered Enigma is back online. We had some administrative junk to take care of, but we've gotten it all out of the way, and we should be able to resume our content updates shortly.
Be ready! |
End of two contests, posted 01-06-2005 by Dark-Elk
It's the end of two contests today, Shattered Enigma viewers. On the one hand, the long-overdue closing of the Short Story Contest. The final results are:
"The Gift of Life", ZejiHydra, 19 votes, 38%
"Soul's Inheritance", GrimMoody, 16 votes, 32%
"Waking Dreams", Forever Jake, 9 votes, 18%
"The Tale of a Forgotten Soul", Chrono Cross Maniac, 12%
ZejiHydra won this round, though often times it was very close. Congratulations and well done to all our entrants, and we hope to see you back in our next contest!
ZejiHydra and GrimMoody, in placing first and second respectively, have some prizes due for them. The custom banners will have to wait a while, but ZejiHydra has $30 of Blizzard merchandise coming his way, and GrimMoody has 20$! Drop SE a line, both of you, to claim your prizes!
The second contest closing today, the Holiday Hunt 2004, was won by none other than resident Staff Manager Shardendra herself! She patiently and cleverly located all 12 images needed. Sadly, nobody else completed the contest, so we may not hold this one again. Still, Shardendra won the $25 prize for this contest! However, out of the kindness of her heart, Shardendra has asked me to donate that $25 to a charity supporting tsunami relief efforts rather than spending it on a prize for her. Give her a round of applause, everyone, because she deserves it.
We'll keep this holiday-themed layout up for another day or so, but after then it'll be put in the attic until next year. We hope everyone had a good holiday season, and we look forward to soon beginning our third year of service to the Blizzard fan community. |
Disaster in Asia, posted 01-03-2005 by Dark-Elk
Shattered Enigma would like to offer our condolences to all those affected by the South Asian tsunami.
Shattered Enigma has added a link to Red Cross Red Crescent to our "Links" section on the left, and we strongly urge any of our members who are able to donate, or otherwise contribute to this or an agency helping with this horrific tragedy.
Thank you all, and may we have a safe and good new year. |
Happy Holidays!, posted 12-25-2004 by Dark-Elk
It's that special day of the year, everyone!
With that said, Shattered Enigma wishes to once again wish all of you the best of holidays, and keep safe!
Also, the final four days of the Holiday Hunt 2004 contest have been surreptitiously hidden around Shattered Enigma. They could be anywhere!
What could be anywhere?
We'd like to make a final addendum to the contest rules, and this might be considered a hint for those searchers down on their luck. If you happen to find any in the artwork or wallpaper areas (HINT HINT!), you won't save the URL of the image, because the SE Art Viewer doesn't show the URL. Instead, we'll need the name of the artwork you found it lurking under. Also, Day 12 has a link underneath it to take you to the Holiday Hunt 2004 Entry Form where you'll give us your 12 URLs or artwork/wallpaper titles. Make sure you've got them all and that they're all correct!
Also, take a look at the second holiday banner! This one is courtesy of well-loved artist Reesa-chan, so pay her back by checking out her artwork and giving her some comments!
Have a great holiday! Shattered Enigma will resume our regular update schedule after the first of the year, so take this time to catch up on the work we've put up in the past few months, or spend the time with your family and friends! |
Days 6-8 Hidden!, posted 12-20-2004 by Dark-Elk

Shattered Enigma v4.1!, posted 12-14-2004 by Dark-Elk
Here we are again, Shattered Enigma viewers, at the tail end of another long-awaited upgrade.
v4.1 has been in a state of development since late July, only about a month after v4.0 released with a rather large number of bugs, glitches, and generally a lot of things that weren't user-friendly.
SE v4.1 is our aim to address some of those issues, while also bringing some brand new stuff to the table, things we fervently hope our long-time members will notice and appreciate as a step up from the past.
Before we begin, though, you may have noticed a...slight layout change. That's right, everyone, SE has kicked into Holiday Mode! 'Tis the season, and Shattered Enigma felt like getting into the swing of things. That's not all, though, because we've got a BRAND NEW CONTEST for you all...and this one is anyone's game, not just the writer, or the artist. Anyone.
However, let us leave mention of this contest alone for a short time, and cover the new features in v4.1
First, the menu has been redesigned to allow for faster loadtimes and greater flexibility, and also now includes the last added Featured Stories, which were long overdue to be added. Apologies to Shardendra, J Cae, and Mayavan Thevendra. The menu isn't one hundred percent perfect, and we're still working on hammering out the highlighting, so rest assured, we're on top of it.
The Contests page is gone temporarily, due to a lack of interest and poor design. It may make a reappearance sometime after the first of the year, but you can expect something even more interesting and useful to replace it before then.
Also, the Hotbox now is glitch-free, and also displays a new segment, the Featured Story of the Week. Pretty self-explanatory. Another change to the hotbox is that now it won't show more than one piece of content from a member at the same time, which will hopefully give more members exposure.
Moving along, you'll find that the list pages (Members, Stories, Artwork, Wallpaper, and Articles) have been totally revamped, showing more information than before. The Wallpaper list was totally redesigned, and no longer displays preview images, as it was often a complaint that they created lengthy loadtimes. Also on the list pages you'll find many more ways to sort things out. Feel free to check them all out.
Articles may seem like a new addition to Shattered Enigma, but in fact the Articles section is a revamp of our v4 Columns page. Gone is the error-prone code and annoying design, replaced with a system very similar to the system used to display stories. Also, you can leave comments on Articles now, as well.
And speaking of comments, it's time to discuss one of the largest changes to Shattered Enigma. Long has the SE art department been underdeveloped, as the staff was under the impression it was a little-viewed section of SE. When we found that wasn't the case, we designed a brand new system to view artwork that is hopefully more to the liking of all our viewers and our artists. I won't explain it here, but click on the Artwork of the Day or Wallpaper of the Day for an example of it. Also, comments can now be left on both artwork and wallpaper.
And while this may seem like a small thing, Shattered Enigma is now pleased to offer full support for content created by multiple members, such as The Forgotten Ones, co-written by ShadowedLight and 3ternity. Previously SE only allowed one member to be listed as the owner of any piece of content here, but now up to 10 members can work together on a piece of fiction, artwork, or an article. Shattered Enigma looks forward to seeing members take advantage of this!
Another small addition is the return of the Shattered Enigma News Archive. Feel free to click the link at the very bottom of this page to stroll back through yesteryear, though be warned that not all the links may work correctly anymore.
Finally, as mentioned above, Shattered Enigma is pleased to announce our Holiday Hunt 2004. Check out this link for all the info, and get moving on it!
Enjoy Shattered Enigma v4.1, viewers, and know that today ushers in a new era for SE. |

Last night at midnight, Shattered Enigma stopped accepting submissions for the Fall 2004 Short Story Contest.

I really hate to do this to everyone, but we're bumping out the submission deadline again. I just realized today that World of Warcraft is coming out, and anyone who gets it won't be doing any writing today, I'd imagine.
Plus, American Thanksgiving is Thursday, and perhaps if we give you all that time, you'll be able to get us some great fiction.
We're officially (and FINALLY) moving the contest submission end date to Sunday, November 28 at 12:00 Midnight CST.
Please make use of this extra time to NOT solely play World of Warcraft, and enjoy your holiday. |
The time has come, my friends..., posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
Yes, it's that time. November 21st has arrived, and with it, the close of the Fall 2004 Short Story Contest.
Not.
We've decided, in looking at the rather dismal amount of submitted stories, that perhaps everyone would benefit from just a few more days. Apologies to anyone who rushed to get their entries in today in time for the close of the contest. Perhaps take the oppurtunity to polish a bit more and resend it?
The contest entrance ending date is now two days from now, November 23rd at midnight (12:00) Central Standard Time.
Please, everyone, make use of this extra time, and help us make this contest more successful than it is appearing to look right now. |

All that I behold is an abomination, posted 12-13-2004 by Forever Jake
Good afternoon, Shattered Enigma. As those of you who have seen his work on our forums can attest, Gamewiz is a rising star here at Shattered Enigma. Today, it is my pleasure to share with you one of his latest creations.
The Hybrid, a genetic melding between Protoss and Zerg subjects, has been a subject seized by countless fanartists and fanauthors since people have been playing Brood War and its no-longer secret Secret Level. Gamewiz, however, has interpreted the Hybrid's appearence somewhat differently than others.
Since the Protoss were purportedly created with 'purity of form', and the Zerg with 'purity of essence', Gamewiz reasons that such a Hybrid of these dual natures would have the form of the Protoss, and the essence of the Zerg. The result is a fearsome creature, very similar to the Protoss in appearence but nonetheless embodying the sinister feel of the Zerg.

Mystifying and enigmatic, the beautiful Dryads and their brothers, the Keepers of the Grove, will always be treasured denizens of the lands of Kalimdor, long after they have faded from the memories of younger races.

Yes, that's right! SE is offering real prizes that will be mailed to our first and second place winners! There are a few conditions.
First, if you win, your address will be required to send the package. Some people may be unwilling to give out the address, and in this case, there's nothing I can do about the prize. Money that would've been spent on that prize will go into a pool to increase future prizes, and will NOT be given to anyone else in the contest or otherwise.
Second, prizes will be shipped by the most basic shipping method available, and will be part of the prize. Going over the limit is unacceptable.
Finally, prizes will not be put up unless the contest has at least 3 non-staff entrants. A bigger contest gives everyone a better read and a more diverse array of stories, so this is one of the biggest catches.
Officially posted contest rules will be going up later today or tomorrow for future reference, but if anyone has any questions, PLEASE let us know by commenting on news articles. SE loves to get feedback from our viewers!
Good luck to all entrants, or people who consider entering! |

Version 4.0 at last!, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
I'm sure by now you've probably noticed things are a little different around here. First, you might be seeing our new scheme, but with some old graphics (i.e. the old banner, or other old images).
This is a result of your browser caching stuff from the old SE and trying to use it instead of the new images. To fix this, refresh the page by hitting F5 if you're using Internet Explorer, or clicking the Refresh or Reload button in your browser. If this doesn't fix the problem, please send an email to dark_elk@hotmail.com, which is my temporary email address while we fix these issues.
Second, some of our stories are currently listed on the site, but when you click on the link, they can't be found. This issue will be resolved within the next 24 hours, so please bear with us!
Finally, you'll probably notice that the poll not only works differently now (Better in my opinion), but that the votes from the contest aren't present anymore. The staff of Shattered Enigma decided that the previous contest was having too much cheating and multi-voting, which we saw as not only unfair to the other competitors, but unfair to all our viewers as well. Everyone has started again with a clean sheet, and hopefully our new system will prevent some more of this multi-voting.
One last note: The forums link on the sidebar, along with the URL http://forums.shatteredenigma.com are currently disabled due to a minor server error, and again will be active in the next 24 hours. In the meantime, http://www.shatteredenigma.com/forums works just fine, so feel free to drop by the forums and tell us what you think of the new layout!
Stay tuned for the next day or so while we iron out the last bugs, and post a full feature list of the new site! |

The Moment Has Arrived!, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
At long last, I'm pleased to unveil our four entrants in the Spring 2004 Short Story Contest!
We've got three veteran authors, and newcomer Boss Mustang Fk. All four are great stories, and all deserve a read.
A poll will be up tomorrow so you can begin voting on these stories. However, please keep in mind the following:
1. Stories reciving multiple votes from the same IP will have all votes from that IP address terminated.
2. Stories recieving multiple votes from IP addresses that closely match will be investigated, and may have their voting counts adjusted.
3. Voting on which story you think best should be based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to:
-Writing ability
-Storyline
-Spelling, grammar, punctuation
Please be honest, and let's run a clean vote this time around!

No content, but much news!, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
Hey everyone, Dark-Elk here again. Sorry to say I'm not here to bring you a content update like most of you were undoubtedly hoping for, but instead to bring you a number of news updates.
First, I wanted to reiterate that the Spring 2004 Short Story Contest is ENDING May 31st at midnight, Central Standard Time. So far not many submissions have been sent in, and that's okay, but remember to get them in in time, because no exceptions will be made!
Second, I am pleased to reveal why Shattered Enigma has been lax as of late in providing you, the visitor, with content updates. It hasn't been our desire, but it has been very important. We've been hard at work creating Shattered Enigma version 4.0!
Yes, that's right...complete with upgrades to many parts of the site and loads of new features coming down the pipe in the future, this version of Shattered Enigma will be the most markedly different than any other. While we've been working on it, we've been avoiding adding more content to make the move to the new system easier. That's why you've seen more art and wallpaper, but not as much fiction.
So this is pretty much your LAST CHANCE to suggest a new feature or option. PLEASE DO SO! Leave a comment on this news article with your suggestion. We love getting feedback from our visitors, especially when it allows us to serve you better.
Expect to see the new Shattered Enigma within a week or so...and take it from me: Shattered Enigma will never be the same again. |

A new pair of polls!, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
It's a belated news update, as the content I'm listing below went up a few days ago, but parts of our admin panel were inoperable, and only now am I able to post this. Technical difficulties are resolved now, though, and we've got some updates to bring you!
First, a new poll started earlier today: "Do you think Shattered Enigma's contests are worth entering?". Shattered Enigma would like to hold one Short Story Contest each season this year, along with a few other small contests here and there. Your input is very important to us! Also, I'd like to ask another question, though because of the poll interface, it isn't easy to do there. However, the news system has a "Comments" link below where you can submit your answer/opinion to this question:
"What do you think should be fixed, added, or improved on Shattered Enigma?"
Again, your input is very important to us! And, if you don't feel like submitting your suggestion to us publicly, e-mail it to us at dark-elk@shatteredenigma.com

The End of Shattered Enigma, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
It is my sad duty to announce that Shattered Enigma is closing our doors as of April 1st, 2004.
APRIL FOOLS!-We're not closing!
Now that I've gotten that out of my system for another year, it is my great pleasure to announce the start of our Spring 2004 Short Story Contest; the same rules apply as before, and will be posted up a little later today for those who've forgotten. The important parts are:
- No more than 10,000 words
- Must be either Diablo, Starcraft, or Warcraft
- Must be an actual story, and may not contain multiple chapters
- Must be rated no higher than R
- Stories submitted to Shattered Enigma may be placed on the site without prior notice to you.
- Contest Begins: April 1st, 2004
- Contest Ends: May 31st, 2004 at MIDNIGHT
Last time we had 6 entrants and a very close race, culminating in a tie, and I hope we have a better turnout this time! Rest assured our poll system will be better than before to prevent more of the multi-voting that seems to plague our important contests and decisions.
So, get writing! |

Possible Rule Breaking..., posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
It has come to my attention that one of the entrants in the Winter 03-04 Short Story Contest recieved 5 votes last night in a very short period of time, all originating from IP addresses very similar.
Should this happen again for any story, that entry will be removed from the contest. We've had this issue before. All of them are great stories, and I would hate for one to be removed for something like this.
I have rectified this error for the story in question.
Please keep this in mind, and do not let this happen again. |

This poll had our largest amount of feedback ever, and we thank you all for your participation! It was also our closest election ever, between "Daemon", by Dark-Elk, and "The Forgotten Ones", co-authored by ShadowedLight and 3ternity.
In the end, though, there could be only one winner. By a staff decision, based upon the votes you all submitted, Shattered Enigma is very pleased to welcome The Forgotten Ones, by ShadowedLight and 3ternity as our newest Featured Story! Please give these amazing and talented authors a round of applause, and go read and review their powerful tale!
Note: The review system, which was apparently down, is now back up and working again. So go send in some reviews!
Second, Shattered Enigma is pleased to present the entrants in the 2003-2004 Winter Short Story Contest!
Each and every one of these stories is a joy to read. I highly urge you to read each and every one of them! There are 6 entrants this time; double what we had before! Shattered Enigma wishes to thank the authors of our entries for their time and effort in getting their contest submissions finished in a timely fashion!
As before, read the stories, and then vote in the poll presented on our left sidebar as to which story you find most deserving. Also, if you're feeling generous or have time on your hands, drop these authors a review of their story! They all deserve it!

Nearly fixed..., posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
Shattered Enigma's staff has put in some long hours over the past few days to rectify all the errors, glitches, and bugs we've found so far. There remains only one major glitch, that being that Jaxom's monthly column "The Crafter's Journey" is still down. We are working hard on bringing this back up!
Also, after we have this fixed, Shattered Enigma is looking for authors and reviewers willing to write weekly or monthly columns. If you're interested, e-mail dark-elk@shatteredenigma.com and send along a copy of a planned column article for evaluation!
Our art section is finally without any problems, and in fact a new illustration has been uploaded from Staff member/writer/artist ShadowedLight. His illustration, "A Peculiarity", is another of his ongoing efforts to bring a visual aspect to his co-authored story "The Forgotten Ones". Be sure to head on over to the art gallery to check this picture out!
We're heading into the home stretch now, as the Winter Short Story Contest is coming to a close THIS SATURDAY AT MIDNIGHT. Be sure to get your fics in on time, and we'll start putting them up Sunday and Monday, and the poll to vote for the winners will begin shortly thereafter! Good luck to all!
Finally, we've got the content updates we promised! Feast your eyes upon a new pair of stories, one in the Starcraft Universe, the other in the Warcraft.

Many apologies!, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk |
As you can see for yourself, SE is in a very bad situation right now. Our forums are down, as is probably 60% of the website. Please bear with us as we try to fix these problems! We will have SE back to full capacity as soon as possible. |
Apologize for the lack of updates.., posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
Shattered Enigma would like to apologize for the lack of content updates over the past week. As many of you may know, there are a number of viruses and worms rampaging around the Internet, and our server was hit slightly, so we've been unable to update. Also, we're working on redoing some of our older coding to make it load faster.
However, we do have some very important news. The Featured Story entrants for the Warcraft section have finally been decided, and now it is left to you to pick one of these excellent stories to gain Featured Status, and all the priveleges given! Check out the poll, and give these amazing authors a vote. And, if you haven't read all of those stories, be sure to read each and every one of them, because it's an even match. Drop the authors a review to let them know what you think!
Also, we're TEN days away from the end of the Winter Short Story Contest, so be sure to put the final layer of polish on those stories and send them on in to dark-elk@shatteredenigma.com. The deadline is Satuday, February 14th, 2004 at exactly midnight. Any submissions recieved afterwards will not be accepted. Good luck to everyone!
Content updates should be coming soon, so everyone who's sent in chapters, don't worry! |
Record Week, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
It's been an amazing week, Shattered Enigma visitors! Early this week, we hit 20000 hits on our main page; a mark to be proud of if ever we've seen one! The staff would like to take this oppurtunity to thank all our writers, artists, and viewers out there who make every second of work worth it!
Speaking of staff members, we've got some new ones! Authors 3ternity, ShadowedLight, and Dargon have all joined the staff to fill out various positions. Give them a big round of applause!
Today we've got a whole wide array of updates, in honor of the 20000 hit record.
First, the Art Section has some new content, thanks to ShadowedLight. Be sure to check out Lich King's Defeat, a hand-drawn art piece drawn to illustrate his story, The Forgotten Ones.
Next, staff member Jaxom92 has another update to his monthly column The Crafter's Journey. This is the long awaited December 2003 update, so go check it out! And Jaxom92 is begging for feedback, so drop him a quick line and tell him what you think!
Finally, we've got some chapter updates to an array of Warcraft stories!

Art and Wallpaper, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
The recent poll has shown the staff of Shattered Enigma that people are interested in our Blizzard fan art, something we weren't fully aware of previously. We apologize for all problems that have occured with it in the past months, such as most images of the Mayavan Thevendra gallery being broken links. All images and their links have been fixed and are available for viewing. However, please note we are in the process of devising an easier and more user-friendly method for our art section, so keep an eye out for it! In the meantime, our Mayavan Thevendra Gallery is here.
Second, we've got some new wallpapers for you all! One is from Goddess, resident artist and staff member. Take a look at that, and while you're there check out Killst4r's contributions as well! All are utterly amazing, and deserve serious consideration when you change your desktop wallpaper again!
No story updates today, everyone; we've been busy working on a number of projects, some of which we hope to have online by the end of the month. Expect some new chapters within the next week! Also, everyone, please keep working on your Winter Short Story Contest submissions!
Stay tuned! |
Minor Update, posted 12-13-2004 by Jaxom92
Hello again. I have been tasked with uploading the rest of WarCraft 2: Tides of Darkness. So, I plan on doing a chapter at a time until I catch up with Jeremy. Might be a while, with all the other things I'm committed too. And that reminds me, we are without a December issue of The Crafters Journey. I'll get to it before the end of January, and then hopefully have January's done too.
Check out the fifth chapter of this amazing retelling of the WC2 story:

'Twas the day before Christmas, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
And all throughout Shattered Enigma, not a staff member was stirring, except for Dark-Elk!
That's right, the last update before Christmas is here, and it's pretty nice. We've got two new Warcraft stories and three chapters to another Warcraft story...can you sense a trend here? There's no mistaking that the Warcraft community is very active at the moment. Starcraft and Diablo authors, get to writing for the Winter Short Story Contest and send us some quality work!

Happy Holidays!, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
First of all, the staff of Shattered Enigma would like to wish each and every one of you happy holidays, whichever ones you celebrate! It's been an amazing year so far since our beginning in February, and we've enjoyed every minute of it. Let's all take these holidays to count the blessings that have been given to us in the past year.
Second, Shattered Enigma would like to announce our Second Short Story Contest, and we're hoping there's more reaction this time! Now that you've all seen the prizes, (amazing as they are!), and the high-quality of the works submitted, the staff is hoping to get more than three entrants this time! Also, the contest is running for a much longer time...close to double! That's right, this contest begins today and runs until February 15th, 2004! As before, stories from each Blizzard gaming universe (Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft) are invited to be submitted, and the rules will remain the same as before, and can be found here.
Third and finally, Shattered Enigma has some new stories, bringing us up to a total of 91 stories! One of these new stories is from the Starcraft universe, and the other is from the booming Warcraft universe. Both of these are quite good, but the Warcraft story, "Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness" by Jeremy is simply amazing. Currently the story stands at over 200 THOUSAND words, making it the longest story found on Shattered Enigma to date. However, due to its extreme length, we haven't got it all up, so we're going to put it up in segments, like with most of our longer stories. Check this story out!
New stories:
Prologue, Chapters 1-3
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness

Prologue, Chapter 1
Safe Horizon

Read and enjoy, loyal viewers! Happy Holidays, from everyone at Shattered Enigma!

Second, we've got another great Warcraft story here, and it's another companion story to "The Forgotten Ones", co-authored by ShadowedLight and 3ternity! This is another must-read for anyone already reading this story!

Short Story Contest Results, posted 12-13-2004 by Jaxom92
Hello folks. Jaxom92 here with his first news article, testing out Elk's new Admin panel. If it doesn't work, I'm sure you, and him, will know about it pretty quick. Anyway, I have a couple pieces of news to post tonight, one of them being the results to the short story contest.
Gone by Dark Elk won with 19 votes. Breathe Deep by Jaxom92 came in a close second with 16 votes and Path of Corruption by B. H. Miles came in third with 12 votes. All the stories were well done and the staff of SE would like to thank each author for their effort in making Shattered Enigma an active member of the Blizzard community. For their efforts, Goddess, our highly talented graphics artist, is creating custom banners for each story. Gone has already recieved its banner and the other two authors will have thiers soon.
Our second piece of news is that Jaxom92's... er... my column is up with a new issue. Novemeber also comes with a name change. The format is staying the same however, so no worries for those who hate change. I would also like to say that I would appreciate reader responses so that I may fill that section of the column.
I believe that's it. If I forgot anything, Elk will be quick to point it out to me and let you know what it is too.

First Update of the Weekend, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
It's been a little longer than we intended, but here's an update to Shattered Enigma!
First, what you're reading right now is an update itself! Shattered Enigma is pleased to announce our new news system, allowing users to comment on articles, and hopefully report any errors they find to us easily so we can deal with them in a timely manner!
Second, we have recieved many notices over the past month about our art section. Shattered Enigma's coders are hard at work redesigning the system, but for the moment it is virtually inactive. Please don't use it at the moment! We will post when it is available again.
Third, as many of you have found out, the Author Bios are available again, with a few new features, such as author hit tracking so you can see how many others are interested in the same author as you are!
Fourth, Shattered Enigma is VERY pleased with the overwhelming response to the review system changes! Our reviews have nearly doubled since! Please, keep reviewing and telling these amazing authors how much you like their stories!
Fifth, Shattered Enigma is dissappointed to mention this, but we have noticed cheating has been going on with the poll system, most notably for Diablo story "Path of Corruption", by B.H.Miles. We have IP records for our votes, and are noticing multiple votes being submitted from very similar IP's, such as from a computer lab or shared connection. STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY. If this matter persists, Path of Corruption may be removed from the contest. I apologize for this inconvienience, and I apologize to the author. It is not fair that the contest be unbalanced by cheating.
Finally, on to the updates. We're trying to boost our Warcraft section up, and so we have! Take a look at what we've got for now!
New stories:
Chapter 1
Daemon
By: Dark-Elk
Chapter 1-5
The Forgotten Ones
By: ShadowedLight
New Chapters:
Chapters 2-3:
In the Gloaming

SE Version 3.0!, posted 12-13-2004 by Dark-Elk
Welcome to the new and improved Shattered Enigma version 3.0, now with more buttons to push than ever before! As you no doubt have already noticed, much has changed. We've got new graphics, a side menu instead of a top menu, one sidebar instead of two...it's a little different. Major thanks go to Dark-Elk and Goddess! Without their talents, this update for SE could not have happened!
The layout of the site isn't all that has changed either! Stories are no longer served from hard-coded HTML pages as they have been. Rather, all stories are now loaded from our database! This is much more secure, cuts down on load time, allows us to put stories up quicker, and generally helps make everyone's life better. Also, the review system has been upgraded! A small review box now appears at the bottom of every chapter of every story, making it much easier for you to review these amazing works of fiction! Again, thanks go to Dark-Elk. Without his coding breakthroughs, this could not have been possible! We're not completely done upgrading Shattered Enigma yet...we planned on premiering our login system, but due to some unresolved issues, we are unable to offer it at this time.
Also, BE WARNED! Any links on pages to author bios or the author list are currently inactive while we restructure them. View them at your own peril!
The poll is finally closed, ending at a narrow 19 to 21 vote. The majority wanted smaller, more frequent updates, and with this new system, Shattered Enigma will be prepared to do just that! As we finalize this new layout, prepare to see a blitz of new stories and other content! The new poll question is "Do you like this layout better than the older one?" The staff has worked long and hard, and we're eager to find out what you all think!
The Fall 2003 Short Story Contest ended on Friday, October 31st. Total recieved submissions were 3 stories, two Starcraft, one Diablo. Links are below. We will have an update next weekend, and will place a poll up asking which of the three you like best. The top two ranked stories will be recieving custom banners made by Goddess, Shattered Enigma's high-level graphic artist. All three stories are of high-caliber, instantly being added to the Shattered Enigma story database. One is from staff member Jaxom92, another from staff member Dark-Elk, and the final is from noted Diablo author B.H. Miles. Check them all out, because you're not going to want to miss these!
Breathe Deep, by Jaxom92
Path of Corruption, by B.H. Miles
Gone, by Dark-Elk
We're hoping to have new content up over this coming week, along with the poll for you to rate these great stories! Keep checking back! |
